gas, petrol
trunk, boot
windshield, windscreen
truck, lorry
fender, wing
hood, bonnet
tag/licence plate, number plate/registration plate
muffler, silencer
driver's license/driver license, driving licence
to pass, to overtake
freeway, motorway
divided highway, dual carriageway
to total, to destroy/to wreck
car park, parking lot
shoulder, verge
Translation into American English:
I own a flatbed truck and I want to sell it used, but it has a few issues. The trunk is really small, the windshield is cracked, one fender is scratched, the hood is dented, the exhaust pipe has a hole, when I take it out on the highway, it can't pass the semis and the registration has expired, just like my driver's license. I'm thinking about selling it to a junkyard for next to nothing if I'm lucky.
Translation into British English:
I own a flatbed van and I would like to sell it second-hand, but it has a few defects. The boot is really small, the windscreen is cracked, one wing is scratched, the bonnet is dented, the exhaust has a hole, when I take it out on the motorway, it can't overtake the lorries and the registration document has expired, just like my driving licence. I wonder if I might sell it to a scrapyard for a pittance if I'm lucky.
Aucune erreur ! C'est impressionnant.
