House of Suns

This is another piece of space opera that I first heard about in this
newsgroup and I want to second the recommendation for it here.  Many
cultures consisting of clones each of one individual surviving together
in the universe until one group is nearly wiped out.  This does feel like
another book designed for sequels which is something I dislike, but it
does stand alone and the premise is an unusual and well-handled one.
