season that they couldn't use any other books after that.
The standard approach in recent years seems to be to adapt the first
book fairly closely, but expanding to include scenes away from the POV
narrator, then starting to swerve off towards the end and then doing
their own thing with subsequent books. As you say Dexter did this;
also True Blood.
On the other hand, The Expanse and Silo both had/have the original
authors on board, so stick fairly close to the source.
BTW, I far preferred TV Dexter to literary Dexter.
