minute before her phone hung up.
 I called someone else.  The bars were gone and It reverted immediately.
 I turned airplane mode on and off. the bars came back.  Repeated 2 steps
before this with same results.
 Used airplane mode to bring the bars back again and tried to bring up a
webpage.  Got a negative message about not being online, or something.
 Connected her to her hostess's wifi, web browser worked fine.
 I called her cell from my phone. Got some negative message about her
being unreachable.
 Called again just now from my phone.  Displays message immediately "Call
ended" and reverted to contact list after 7 seconds, each time.
 What's wrong.  How do I fix it?

You should consider reverting to factory settings and re-setting up the phone again leaving off any dodgy looking apps. Which can be a real PITA, especially if you don't use a Google account. But it also might be a hardware fault.
