It's basically a computer that can make phone calls.
Mainly they're used for apps and online operations. Mine

yes you can live without a Cellphone, but you can also live without electricity, mains water, a car etc. etc. etc. Is it an enjoyable, rewarding experience, probably not. Will it cost me financially, probably. Is it sensible? About as sensible as avoiding blood transfusions and modern medicines.
