So it seems they put even the most basic features like shuffle mode
behind the paywall. Which means I won't even bother to try the app.
No problem. For something so commonly wanted, there's gonna be a lot of
crapware out there. I wish I could help you but I've never tested them.
Let's see if we've ever covered the "screensaver" app on this newsgroup.
<https://www.novabbs.com/computers/thread.php?group=comp.mobile.android>
Search = screensaver
I searched by title and body & "screensaver" only finds this thread.
So you're the first. I had thought so since I didn't find anything in my
notes about comp.mobile.android apps, so it's important to find something.
If I run a search without all your terms, I can find more free stuff, where
I try to concentrate on open source first and also free/noads second.
The word "wallpaper" keeps associating itself with my screensaver searches.
Muzeo Wallpaper <https://github.com/muzei/muzei>
This is an open source screensaver with the developer being active on XDA.
It allows you to use widgets that do anything, to be the screensaver.

This is a FOSS screensaver for clocks but that's not what you want.
<https://github.com/schorschii/FsClock-Android>
This also isn't what you want, it's for TVs.
<https://github.com/theothernt/AerialViews>
Neither is this exactly what you want - it's for wallpapers.

Good luck. Let us know how it works out so I can record the result
for the next person who asks for a free screensaver app.

Well, the problem is that there are tons of apps in the playstore, but
the vast majority are garbage and an additional problem is that many
are aimed at making a slideshow, so producing some sort of static video
of a slideshow, rather than a kind of dynamic photo frame that simply
keeps shuffling pics indefinitely.
It's a nice way to enjoy art, because if you have a ton of abstract art
images, it's great to shuffle them in random combinations where
different works are shown side by side every time.
I sympathize with almost everyone who asks a valid question on this
newsgroup (which has not been asked before and therefore already answered).
I was shocked that it was difficult for me to find a FOSS screensaver, so
now I'm looking for you on izzysoft to see what it has in their repository.

These are the FOSS hits I found that might be of use to you.

Of those, Slideshow Screensaver seems the one I'd suggest testing first.
I've also tried to see if grok was able to come up with some suggestions, since it seems to actually explore a bunch of webpages to answer questions with up2date information, but it was claiming that it would be very unlikely to find a free app that is able to display 4 images simultaneously in a slideshow.
Kinda weird, because years ago I had a free app on the ipad that did this.
I think with the current rate of AI development, I can envision creating a custom app from scratch with AI assistance in the near future.
It's not that complicated to display 4 images on screen simultaneously, though of course there are various complications (like a huge variety of image file formats).
It would be so nice if AI masters the skill of programming way beyond
human skills so we can finally have an abundance of awesome and useful free apps without the need to terrorize people with idiotic ads.
