Yes, it's spam. Your number, like the rest of ours, is either on a list,
or has been randomly picked. There aren't that many phone numbers,
unfortunately. Why these group chats get started, I don't know.
Considering that more often than not there's no messages sent to it by
the initiator, I assume they're created to probe active numbers,
which is confirmed when someone leaves the chat - it proves a real
person has the phone number.

You can and should ignore it. If you can swing blocking texts from
numbers not in your contact list, I recommend doing it. That's not
feasible for everyone though. If anyone knows a better way, I'd love to
know it - I can't afford to block unknown numbers.

I don't see what could be gained by attempting to call the numbers that
start these stupid group chats. At best it won't actually go anywhere,
at worst you're just confirming to them that your number is real,
ensuring more spam in the future.
