 I tried to block the person who began the chat, but I couldn't find that
option.

I don't have any group on messages, so I can not check. Just ban his phone in contacts. Mark him as spam.

 It did offer for me to remove him from the group, from his own
group, so I did that!  But it's probably for no avail, since it dawned
on me afterwards that that still confirms that my number is a real
number.

He knows that from day zero. He knows that he got you subscribed.

A bad deal for me since these group chats were rare and I
usually didn't know about htem until I turned the phone on, and then
only if I looked at my textign app     I only get a few spam phone calls
now, one a day or so.  We'll see if it increases.
