 Doesn't work. Many people call the cars "Beemers".

And normal people don't decide that people can't own a BMW...
...based on whether or not they know the slang terminology.

I may have mentioned this once.  My mother who is German made sure I
knew how to pronounce Audi correctly.  She hated when people pronounced
it "au-di" and said it's pronounced "ow-di".

 It's likely mostly Americans who can't pronounce it properly. They have enough trouble with proper English, let alone any other language.  :-p
