The "madness" lies in starting with a base install, installing a GNOME editor,
being suprised that it installs a bunch of stuff for the GNOME desktop, and
then counting it up and posting it to COLA.
A few time I have decided not to install a package because of the number of
(usually KDE) dependencies it has.
Just use the handy package manager GUI and ignore the noise. It will be
just like installing something on Windows that downloads the world.

I don't use it but apparently have it on the Ubuntu box.

Does Windows ever offer to take out the garbage?
Heh, often an update on Linux will slightly reduced the amount of
installed bytes.
