I have a medium SUV (old Ford Explorer).  Fold down the rear seats and I have tons of space to carry things.  Move the front seats up a bit and I can lay flat inside (handy for car dating).
Handles fine - plenty fast enough to get speeding tickets if I'm not careful.

It’s just dumb. They have an inherently higher centre of gravity,
which compromises their handling. Then they try to lower the roof to
compensate, and that just reduces the interior room.

Depends on the vehicle.  Some are lower profile than others.  I'm 6'1" and the top of my Explorer roof is even with my eyeballs.  Lots of headroom inside.
Put some fresh shocks and suspension bushings in there (sway bar bushings and end links) and it handles well.
Then there's the safety of SUVs.

The ONLY auto I'd consider buying - and even then only as a 2nd vehicle - is a big ole Porsche Panamera.

Ah, I just realized ... you’re in the USA, aren’t you? Cars in the USA aren’t expected to go around corners.

Can you make turns in NZ?  Do you even have paved roads?
