What I found out is after a lifetime of hiking in the mountains I have a
finely tuned sense of how hard I can push without hitting the anaerobic
zone. The electronics only put a number on it.
 I have a step counter on my phone, again mostly out of curiosity. It does
not use the GPS but is surprisingly accurate compared to the distance
recorded by a GPS receiver. I never wanted one of those Dick Track smart
watches some of my friends have but when the Charge 6 was available at a
steep discount I figured 'Why not?' Different shape but it's no more
obnoxious than my Timex Expedition. It does steps and distance, either
using the crappy internal GPS or the one in the phone if it's paired. It
also records the HR continuously. I can look at the graph and figure out
when I was going up a particularly steep stretch, on the level, or going
downhill.  Again, nerd info.
 I do like the 'cardio' feature in the gym's treadmills, stair steppers,
and bikes to adapt the workload and keep me honest. It calculates the
target HR from the age you input and I usually lie a bit to get something
a little more challenging.

None is necessary (as I've mentioned before).
No device can tell you what to do apriori _or_ posteriori. The body itself tell you that. It doesn't need to be anything quantitative either. If it had to, by now, you'd be born with a "heart rate monitor" as part of your dick or any other organ that can visually change size or color or shape based on what the body is going through at the moment.
I've stopped wondering why my dealing with you "engineers" always takes my attention to the concept of "Dick."
Observe, heed, and study the clues, especially the _cues_ that your own body signals. I cured my type 2 diabetes doing just that and nothing else as soon as I got time to work on that. 20 years of physician's advice, NIH standards, and pharma, didn't do jack for that.
