Could also be a $PATH issue. I know I had to launch some programs from
the terminal until I learned about .xsessionrc because Debian doesn't
add $HOME/.local/bin for some reason.

And extra diagnostic info is nice.

I never launch a GUI program from a terminal because it's inefficient.
When you do it, you show me how I'm right about it.
