As I said before, I encountered total loss of display that at first was sporadic then became permanent. I've been using my funky Optiplex 9020 ($12 from thrift store) for the past month or so as a result.
My tests with my 7050 which is my main Linux machine had eliminated my monitor and its plugs as sources of the problem. So the culprit was either the 7050 (plugs as well as GPU), or the display cable, the latter being Relf's favorite culprit in response to _any_ computer problem.
Today my order of a new display cable arrived and I checked it with my 7050 and all display issues disappeared into thin air :)
So perhaps Relf knew something when he recommended changing the cable with a new one for ANY computer issue :-)))
Well, he was sure right this time.
I had checked the bad display cable end to end many times, looking for cat bites or some other form of damage. Washed both ends clean of cat urine a few times and dried it well. I could see no sign of any damage. None. So I'd stayed a bit worried it was my $75 Optiplex 7050. I've only had it a year or so.
So I'm gladly back at my main Linux computer :)
Did anybody find out more about Relf? I think Covid killed him. That would explain the unusual lag between his last post and his death.
