Nothing is "broken".

BTW, there's a new set of drivers from the NVIDIA web site -- a
new release driver and a new beta. I'm now running the beta.

The video drivers are used to drive the video.

Without the video drivers, you won't have graphics for your gui, or
to to play kick-ass games like Elite Dangerous: Trailblazers.

didn't your computer come with video drivers

Very, very old ones.

Anybody using a discrete video card is most likely keeping up with
video drivers. NVIDIA and RADEON are two such examples.

and this is to play a game
That is one use of video drivers.
Another -- which you are probably more familiar with -- is to display a
gui for drooling over Usenet posts, Youtube,
and whatever else you fancy to look at.
but i don't use anything fancy to do that ,
in fact i don't go to posted youtubes
Unposted youtubes are more fun, anyway.
ObLinux:
Should mention that with NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-570.133.07 and
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-575.51.02 Steam has been throwing an error:
MESA: error: DRM_VIRTGPU_RESOURCE_CREATE_BLOB failed with Invalid argument
MESA: error: Failed to create virtgpu AddressSpaceStream
MESA: error: vulkan: Failed to get host connection
Doesn't seem to affect gaming, but it's annoying. Might have something
to do with my changes to my Linux .config, where I set some DRM modules
to "y" (add to kernel) instead of "m" (build as module). Also some
related errors in dmesg. Will have to investigate.
