Roger Nichols, the composer behind some of Carpenters’ greatest hits,
has died at the age of 84. The songwriter was a composer and
songwriter who was behind Carpenters’ biggest hits We’ve Only Just
Begun and Rainy Days and Mondays, and was a frequent collaborator. It
was announced that he died on May 17, but the news was only just made
public. Paul Williams, his songwriting partner of many years,
confirmed the news in a post (Picture: AnythingGoes)

I only discovered their existence after watching a documentary on Karen
Carpenter. I didn't grow up in the 70s, and the music industry had
largely moved on from that style in the 80s when I was a kid. Still,
there is no denying that she had a fantastic voice and that the songs
themselves were beautiful.

They were big when I was in college. Kind of an island of pop when hard rock
was really popular. (Actually there was a lot of variety back in those
days.)

I think they only had three number one hits but, according to Wikipedia,
they had a lot of Platinum albums.

4 Platinum, 3 Double Platinum, 1 Triple Platinum, 1 Quadruple Platinum,
and one 7x Platinum (that was their compilation album, "The Singles: 1969
   - 1973"). They had an additional 10 Gold Albums. (Many of them
compilation albums.) The Carpenters were still marketed heavily after
   Karen Carpenter's death in 1983.

Anyhow, I liked their music. You do need to give Paul Williams credit for
the lyrics of "We've Only Just Begun," though. Roger Nichols composed the
music. The two worked well together.
