The shortcut for Spotlight was always COMMAND-space.
And if you couldn't find out how to change it, you didn't look very hard...

 At that point, I gave up and asked if they had a Windows machine, running
Putty. They did. That worked a lot better.

There was nothing wrong with the Mac.
The problem was the operator.
