I don’t think MS-DOS could track file lengths down to the byte until
version 2. This was the one that added a random smattering of Unix-like
features, including I/O redirection and “piping” (all done with temporary
files, no actual support for pipes -- or even multitasking -- in the OS).

The other reason corporations buy something is to bury it.

Luckily, when you do that with a proprietary idea, all it does is leave
the field wide open for the Open Source competitor to take over.
