I grew up in that area and the massacre at Fort William Henry was part of
the local lore. James Fenimore Cooper got a lot of miles out of it.

What was interesting about the Comanches, and probably others, is that it
wasn’t just “let’s torture these people because we hate them”, but rather a
deliberate policy of terror to discourage anyone from attacking them or
trespassing onto their territory.
