If you would like to experience a country with as few US influences as possible, I'd recommend some of the enemies (at your own risk of course) of the US such as China or a moslem country or two. There is a certain charm to being "lost in translation", but in my case that charm is not big enough to offset the trouble, lost time and cost of the trip.

The only country I loathed being in was Islamic Turkey.
