 True. If you would like to experience a country with as few US influences as possible, I'd recommend some of the enemies (at your own risk of course) of the US such as China or a moslem country or two. There is a certain charm to being "lost in translation", but in my case that charm is not big enough to offset the trouble, lost time and cost of the trip.

Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. For me, its just an animal, and if I feel the need to see one I can just go to the Zoo and save a tonne of money, time and hassle. It was also dirty, hot, and annoying when I had to have 2 AK-47 guards when walking around in Nairobi (this was several decades ago).
