Plane is 'make flat'
There are hundreds of types of woodworking planes. Not all
of them 'make flat', some 'make beads' or 'make coves' or
'make tongues' or 'make rabbets' (rebates for the UK crowd).
Instead of software feature creep,. we have language definition creep.
So gay no longer means happy and carefree, but miserable and whiny. And dysfunctional
Awesome no longer means awe inspiring, juts well, OK ish.
Nice no longer means finely balanced or precise, but...well...OK-ish
Plane originally meaning a flat chisel held in a self aligning jig, becomes any chisel held in a self aligning jig
Plane meaning flat surface in an aircraft, becomes a curved surface in an aircraft, before being supplanted by the term 'wing'.
In geometry plane still retains its originally meaning
