   The whole scheme depends on accelerometers and PID-like
   algos. Your movements and control inputs add/subtract to
   the calx, deviations from vertical centered stationary.
   Couldn't be made until the compact computing power was
   finally adequate. Much cheaper drones now are not so
   much different - can hover in place even in a wind -
   except the 3rd dimension is added to the mix.
