 It is a very convenient way to get a quick look at what's under a
window. Used it many times on the small laptop display.
 

In my setup if I minimise the windows completely they are just a tab in the task bar.

Nope. But half a dozen editor screens, a windows VM running 2D and 3D Cad, a 3D slicer and a web browser is common. Plus mail and calendar
But they life on different *virtual* screens.
And when minimised they take up no real estate
