 As far as I know, multi-window mode has been present in GIMP since GIMP
began.  The "everything packed into a single window" mode is a newer
add-on (and one that I have never enabled myself).

   Multi-Window is USUALLY more useful - lets you
   tweak and re-tweak and FINALLY merge. However
   for some needs, single-window is just easier
   and more intuitive.
   In any case, I remind, GIMP is *freeware* - the
   Great Mission. So DON'T bitch a lot.
