Simply bullshit. The address field is exactly 32 bits long and that
means it can't be simply extended. Devices and software expect it to be
exactly that long and will read and process 32 bits.

I get the feeling someone doesn’t appreciate that point, and thinks that
addresses in IP packets are stored as decimal strings or something ...
