I'd hardly call it fun when someone puts a feature like this into
production software. If the person who did this can be identified, they
should be fired and possibly even prosecuted.

Not true. Under many circumstances it constitutes a hate crime which is a
legal definition in many jurisdictions including the Federal US.
In that case, it's not just being a racist but committing an act of racial discrimination while performing specific act (like a racially motivated homicide). One can be a racist without violating any laws, which is why it is ultimately a matter of opinion in most cases.
