They teach you the basic laws of physics at school. Time travel is only possible forwards in time. Doing that is easy since we do it every day and while travelling at high speed or experiencing high gravity causes it to happen faster. Travel backwards in time is shown to be impossible in quantum field theory and only possible in general relativity in a universe that contains or in which you can create closed time loops which is not the one in which we live in. Travelling sideways in time, ie. by tunnelling to another parallel universe might be possible but you'd require more energy than this universe contains in order to do it and you'd end up killing yourself in the process of going through a wormhole, unless you can create some sort of teleportation mechanism that doesn't dismantle the whole of your body piece by piece.
