Does the person who painted your walls demand you pay him a fee for every day you look at them?

That's a silly comparison since your local plumber didn't invent / create the central heating system, so has no copyright on it. The person / company that did invent it will have the appropriate patents, trademarks, and copyrights, and they will be be paid a fee whenever anyone buys it or any other compnay uses it in their devices. Similarly with the local painter.
Having said that, there are some systems where you do actually pay an on-going subscription to continue using such things, although that usually includes on-going maintenance and may or may not include upgrades to newer versions.
Copyright itself should be extended to cover the continual use. Winnie the Pooh (for example) should still be copyright for as long as the rights owners want to publish or sell books, etc. about the character. Then we wouldn't have to suffer the moronic idiocy of things like the "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" horror movie.
