Well, the Doctor did keep trying to meet Leonardo in The Masque of
Mandragora. That's probably it.
Incidentally, I've just read a story in Missing Pieces (the charity
anthology) — that's Eye of the Beholder by Tom and Alryssa Kelly — where
the eighth Doctor takes drawing lessons from Leonardo for a short
while... and generally acts like they're old friends, from multiple
faces back. So, if you trust /that.../
