Americans may know her better from the US show "Ugly Betty".

at times... especially the bumbling police man.

 But aren't the cops always bumbling ("Agatha Raisin", "Father Brown", "Shakespeare & Hathaway", "Harry Wild", "Miss Scarlet and The Duke" .... Do you get the idea I watch a few British 'Police' series??) when they are just the 'outsiders', unlike say, 'The Bill' (yes, it's been a while) and 'Vera'!!

Yep. The idea that the private investigator is smarter than the police is ages old. Books like Miss Marple, Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, etc. all had that same basic idea. It also copied over to American shows such as "Psych" and "Monk" (although Monk was an ex-policeman).
The actor who plays the bumbling detective in "Agatha Raisin" was in "The Bill" towards the end as a police crime scene investigator (he was actually in "The Bill" as three different characters over the years).
