Yep. VHS, Windows OS, and Tesla cars are three other "popular" but
incredibly stupid things. Usually what sells the most is the cheapest
option rather than the best option.
VHS was much better then Beta!
Beta was Better!! Hence the NAME!!
Betamax was the easily better format for picture quality, but lost out to the cheaper VHS which also had longer recording times. Beta was (and probably still is in some places) the choice for professional film and TV makers.
Sort of suggests something that most (if not all) the 'on location' T.V. News Cameras of the mid-80's onwards were BetaCams!!
Betamax and Betacam are similar in some ways, but different in others. Betacam was better than Betamax. They did use the same type of video cassette, but the video formats themselves were not interchagable.
