I do prefer a newsreader, but an online portal that is not
Google Groups is handy for those that find that sort of thing
easier to use.
I think that (Online Portal) is what Eternal-September's
operator, Ray, is tring to set up with .... is it RockLight or
something.
Rocksolid Light is the actual software for the web based forum
set-up, using nntp as its back-end. (Think "News Portal" from
the old days.) NovaBBS is the one the guy running the free nntp
service i2pn2 uses, but yes, Ray at eternal-september is
supposed to be working an his own version for web access to his
Usenet service...
For those that were used to accessing Usenet via a web portal -
Tim and the Coca-Cola Kid spring to mind - it would make Usenet
easy for them to use again. No need to configure a newsreader
and all that... In the long run it would also mean smartphone
and tablet access to Usenet would be improved. That's why I
asked Mike about NovaBBS on his new Android phone.
I’d be happy to use a well behaved online service and would even pay a
nominal one off or annual fee to maintain it (I was happy to pay the
Germans a few euros a year for news.individual.net) but I don’t think
NovaBBS is a great answer. There is no good Android app (PhoNews is the
best I could find) - the few options out there almost all focus on
binaries. News reading is old fashioned and probably on its way out.
This app on iPhone (NewsTap) is excellent except for lack of kill files
(you can colour code messages from individuals and mark them as read on
receipt, which is usually good enough). But this phone’s lightning port has
died (can only charge by induction), and it’s a good few years old, so a
great corporate-plus-Black-Friday discount on Samsungs mean I’m finally
weaning myself off the Apple ecosystem so goodbye NewsTap.
But, I’ve literally just spotted what might be my solution: Thunderbird
finally has an Android client! Off to check it out now.
