I’d be happy to use a well behaved online service and
would even pay a nominal one off or annual fee to
maintain it (I was happy to pay the Germans a few euros a
year for news.individual.net) but I don’t think NovaBBS
is a great answer. There is no good Android app (PhoNews
is the best I could find) - the few options out there
almost all focus on binaries. News reading is old
fashioned and probably on its way out.
But, I’ve literally just spotted what might be my
solution: Thunderbird finally has an Android client! Off
to check it out now.
Nope, like K-9 before it, its just ans email client. No one
seems to be stepping up to the plate to add nntp
functionality. Ah well. I had hopes for a day, there.
Most people assume nntp is dead or dying out... if they even
know what it is. The majority of the Usenet world in 2024
revolves around Binaries and indexers now since NZB's have
made it a lot easier to 'get' stuff from Usenet than it was
in the old days of decoding a hundred pieces and then
putting them all together yourself... (etc.)
That's why I hope to see the online web portals [like
NovaBBS] improve in time as it is possible that people will
be more inclined to access Usenet via a web forum type of
thing whilst they are browsing online than go to the hassle
of setting-up a newsreader and downloading messages from
newsgroups. We are old school, we can do it in our sleep,
but some people's heads would explode trying to configure
something called a newsreader and having to then sign up for
a news service to actually read things!!!
Ever did a traffic analysis?
No Dave, I don't need to... I am well aware that Usenet traffic
has increased to record levels, but you are being disingenuous
if you are trying to say that text based newsgroups [like RADW]
have shown any growth in 2024 compared to ten years ago. As you
know full well - apart from some comp. newsgroups maybe - most
of the groups that we frequent have seen a decline in usage. The
majority of traffic on Usenet in 2024 is related to .binaries
newsgroups and automated bots.
In 2024 one HD episode of a television show can be multiple GB's
in size - which would be bigger than the whole text archive of
RADW going back to it's beginning! That's why Usenet traffic is
growing and paid Usenet services thrive... not so twenty-five
people can talk about Doctor Who, another twenty-five people
talk about soccer, fifteen discuss Star Wars, ten more discuss
the latest news and three talk about hockey!!!
