The point he syas is that when exporting "/media/<user>/usbsomething", the clients can not see the files, only the mount point.
So he is trying to export a mounted partition?
I always start with ...
*(ro,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
In /etc/exports for the least restricted export
