A friend send me a link to this video today and it seemed to be very
appropriate for this newsgroup so I'm posting it here:

I'd never thought of Star Wars as essentially being a silent film
with music replacing dialog but the presenter makes a reasonably
strong case for his argument. There are clips of interviews with
John Williams giving his thoughts as well.

'Dialogue'.  Heh...

Is this your idea of a spelling flame?

I know perfectly well that "dialogue" is the correct spelling everywhere
in the Anglosphere *except* in the USA. which insists on the simplified
spelling "dialog". I know and use both spellings. I just happened to
use the American spelling today. So what?

The dialogue in the first SW was laughable ...enjoyable only because
one could think the corn tongue-in-cheek, rather than the solemn
myth-making it turns out was intended.  The actors themselves were
astonished.

Agreed.  How Cowboys and Indians in Space got to the level of hype it
has is beyond me.

STARSHIP TROOPERS was another universally popular movie that seems to
have evoked such a sharply schizoid audience reaction, with each of the
two camps finding the other's take inexplicable.

There are those who think Paul Verhoeven knows what he’s doing and then
there are the rest of us who are correct.

Sharon Stone thinks he knew what he was doing...
 Hahahahahahaha
 Thus proving my point completely!
The woman who insisted on continuing to claim she’d been in Mensa, even
after Mensa came out and called her a liar publicly.
A good friend of mine who was at the time of Disney story artist got
dragged to a party after work on a Friday night. He entered this big house
and finds the walls all lined with posters for Verhoven movies. Yes, he was
at a party at Verhoeven‘s house.
Now he and I had had many long discussions about Verhoven. He thought
Verhoven was a genius and I thought Verhoeven didn’t speak English well
enough to understand what he was doing. That he thought stuff like starship
troopers was a straightforward action film, and not an absurdist comedy.
so my buddy calls me about two in the morning when he gets home and says
“oh my God you were right. He oesn’t have the slightest idea what he’s
doing his success has all been blind luck“
Well, *somebody* with wit had to have been behind it.  That much tongue-in-cheek can't have been accidental.  Fwiw, the Internet seems rather definite that Verhoeven (a dedicated Liberal) was satirizing.
