The American Society of Magical Negroes (theatrical) New movie starring
Justice Smith as a struggling young artist who is recruited by David
Alan Grier to join a secret organization of African Americans who use
magic to make the lives of White people better.  Things get complicated
when during his first assignment Smith falls in love with a woman who
the guy he's trying to help also starts to like.  So he's ordered to
sacrifice his love for the greater good.  The movie is a social
commentary and satirizes movies like "Driving Miss Daisy," "Hitch," and
"The Green Mile," amongst many, many, other movies like that.  Overall
I'd rank it slightly better than meh.  It held my interest and it was
funny when it needed to be.  But I think I just wanted more.  Maybe more
humor or more action (technically the movie had no action). Just more.
I think perhaps my main fault is the movie lacked a true antagonist.
Sure the guy Justice Smith was helping was by default his foil, but I
was expecting to see a true antagonist, perhaps with their own magical
powers.  And in the back of my mind I kept expecting that to happen but
it never did.  The movie basically played it safe.  But if you're going
to release a movie with that title, don't play it safe!  "Sorry to
Bother You" covered the same ground but did it much better by not
playing it safe.

CRITICS *HATE* THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MAGICAL NEGROES BECAUSE IT *ISN'T*

Someone in another group discussing this movie posted a link to an old
Key & Peele sketch which covers the same ground.  The sketch is really
funny and it's exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for in this movie.

That was me, although indirectly.
