This is pretty much the storyline of several movies. For example, I recent saw a flick on Tubi about an ex-special forces chyck who hunts human traffickers with her partner.
If this ever happened in real life, I'm pretty sure they'd quickly become heroes to about 70% of the population, even in Cali.
