How horrible for him (and of course your mother)! And of course I'm sure it was awful for you and the rest of your family as well.
Yes he spent most of the rest of that day in the hands of the Tucson
city police and was not free to go till the local DA confirmed no
charges were planned. (That they weren't surprised me but we got him
home to Vancouver asap after his release)
Before he arrived home I had to deal with 3 separate reporters seeking
a story. I answered their questions but I was at work and therefore
didn't spend my whole day at it.
In short - in the scenario described above there would obviously be
consequences - there may or may not be charges involved.
