If Trump had wanted to make a point about lack of state and local
cooperation, they had days to obtain federal arrest warrants for their high priority list of dangerous men to deport. That forces local cooperation.

 

"Chicago Public Schools said it would not allow ICE agents access to schools and facilities "unless they produce a criminal judicial warrant signed by a federal judge". School officials won't allow ICE agents access based on administrative warrants, ICE detainers "or other document issued by an agency enforcing civil immigration law," officials said.

 

They don't get to make that call. Administrative warrants are warrants. They have force of law. If Chicago doesn't like that, they can try to get Congress to change the law, but until then, they don't have the authority to refuse to comply. If they try, they can be arrested for obstruction.

 First of all, we don't know what paperwork was presented, if any. My
guess is they just wanted to question people without targeting specific
aliens for removal.

 Since we currently have control of Congress, they should pass a federal law either requiring state and local cops to honor ICE detainers or defining it as obstruction not to. No more of these local cities deciding whether they will or will not honor valid detainers. Make it a federal crime to refuse to do it, then lock up a few blue mayors or police chiefs and see how they like the inside of the jailhouse.
