I learned a little tidbit of history just now that might be of interest to Americans. It seems the Brits were so keen to stay on the good side of J. Edgar Hoover, the founding Director of the FBI, that they awarded him an honourary knighthood in the early days of the Cold War, largely to make up for a German communist refugee in Britain, Klaus Fuchs, leaking atomic secrets to Stalin.
