Fringe S2E10 'Grey Matters'.  IMDb sez: "Olivia and Peter look into some patients of mental institutions that regain their mental state after having gone through a brain intervention performed by a shape-shifter named Newton. This is directly related to Walter and his brain."
The glyphs in this episode spell "portal".
"Thomas Jerome Newton" is the name assumed by a humanoid alien visitor to Earth in the 1963 novel "The Man Who Fell To Earth" by Walter Tevis. David Bowie played the part in the 1976 movie.
The license plate on Olivia's Lincoln Navigator is 1C3PO1. It can be seen clearly as the truck goes through the gate by the guard shack at the beginning.
There are a number of H. P. Lovecraft references. Dunwich is one of the hospitals, with Dr. West the physician the team works with. Two of the three key patients were Deborah Crampton and Stuart Gordon. Barbara Crampton and Stuart Gordon are the lead actress and director of several film adaptations of Lovecraft stories, including Re-Animator (1985).
