It is my contention that the French demanded that border during the
Mandatory period to create unnecessary tension. The border cut off the
Jordan River from its source. The British were fools to agree to it
without an agreement on joint water development.
the threat to divert the headwaters of the Jordan River
was, while buried in history, a major factor in the 1967
(aka "The Six Day") war between Israel and a bunch of
the neighboring Arab states.
That wasn't the first time that was a possibility either.
Good heavens. It actually made it into Wikipedia articles on the Hasbani
River (one of the sources of the Jordan) and the Jordan River.
This was predictable during the Mandatory period, Fuck the French. It's
truly incredible how many wars had their proximate cause in the Treaty
of Versailles.
