The Democrats messed up all the way along by not building a bench of
potential candidates going back to Obama's time in office. Everything

True, and I can't say the Republicans are doing any better. There are
clearly no standout replacements for Trump when you have people
strongly suggest Vance should be his replacement.
I've heard definite enthusiasm for both Vance and Rubio as Trump's
successors. I don't know if any of the rest of his cabinet or major
appointments is similarly favoured.
Personally, I've always preferred Ted Cruz over Trump
Ted Cruz is great but he's been unfortunately saddled with resembling a
grown-up Eddie Munster, which in this TV world where appearance matters as
much (if not more) than substance will leave him forever aspiring to higher
office but never achieving it.
There was talk at one point of putting him on the Supreme Court. I like
that idea. He could do a lot of good there.

Yep, that would be a good fit.
Would he be capable of turning off the political grandstanding? Yeah
it's great fun to question a witness at a Senate hearing, twisting the
knife, but he can't talk to members of the Supreme Court bar like that.
Ted Olson was an absolute genius; a great loss when he died last year.
Paul Clement, still actively practicing appellate law, was great too.
He can't state the law like his over-the-top campaigning.
It's beem too long since we had a politician on the Court rather than
just an elevated appellate court judge (Kagan being the exception).
