What Did You Watch?
Yesterday, I didn't really watch soaps (I think I had CBS soaps on, until they interrupted Y&R with another irrelevant "Special Report" broadcast break-in, and so then I turned CBS off). I did finish off season #2 of "School Spirits", and a LMN flick, yesterday:
School Spirits (Pee+) - Ep's #2.7 & 2.8, the "season finale" (as, after the fact, this show was renewed for a third and hopefully final season).
Yuck - in one of these episodes, we get totally gratuitous butt nudity from Milo Manheim - I really did not need this!! (We also get almost partial nudity from Peyton List The Younger, but just not quite!)
I was pleased as punch that they brought Dawn (RaeAnne Boon) back for a flashback scene in one season #2 episode, but was quite annoyed that a lot of the other ghosts from season #1 were either totally ignored (like the theater geek ghost played by Zoe Christie) or were almost totally shelved (e.g. the two "background ghosts" from the "support group" from season #1 who show up very briefly in the middle of season #2 but who are never seen again before or after that).
In these episodes, we finally get some answers as to what Mr. Martin and Janet Hamilton were up to as ghosts, and a little bit more about how they came to be ghosts in the first place.
Indeed, the season finale was a rather schizophrenic affair, seemingly working at cross purposes, to: 1) wrap up all of the show's main storylines, and 2) not wrap everything up so there would be something left for "season #3".
It would seem that impulse #1 mostly won out, as the finale mostly wraps things up - it gets both Janet-as-Maddie, and later Mr. Martin-as-Mr. Anderson, back to the school. As a result of this, Mr. Anderson is able to reinhabit his body and eject Ghost-Mr. Martin from it. (Ironically, this will put the real Mr. Anderson in ever more legal trouble as Mr. Martin-as-Mr. Anderson commit crimes like grand theft auto!)
The "cliffhanger" going into the end of this episode is whether Maddie gets her body back, and as to whether any of the ghosts get to finally "cross over". I won't spoil that, except to say one ghost does get the opportunity to "cross over", and even though the show would lose a marquee character/actor in the process, they shouldn't second-guess themselves, and should have that character absent from season #3.
But they throw in a few twists (including one big one) at the end of the finale, to set up for possible season #3 storylines.
I would strongly urge the people behind this show to realize that a third season is a gift - they should use it to fully wrap up this show's (remaining) storylines, and not do anything dumb like use season #3's finale to try and set up a season #4. Just use the added time to fully wrap this show up!
The Secret Life of My Other Wife (LMN) - While I liked the lead (Emma Johnson) of this one, I didn't care for its overall story - it was both unbelievable and not really suspenseful.
Down on her luck waitress (Johnson) is rescued from a vengeful scuzzball customer by a seemingly nice guy (Giles Panton) - this being a Lifetime flick, this can only mean that this "nice guy" will turn out to be an even bigger creep and psycho than the attacking customer!
The first "red flag" is when the dude tells the waitress that he already has two wives (Alana Hawley Purvis and Teagan Vincze)! Why she doesn't goes running, screaming, from the dude at this point is the first red flag for the viewer that this flick doesn't have an ounce of believability!
So, rather than run away, life conspires(?...) against the waitress, forcing her to move in with this dude and his two wives.
Soon enough, another shady character turns up, claiming to be the brother of the dude's most recent previous "girlfriend", and telling the waitress that the sister has been missing ever since - he wants the waitress to poke around and find out what happened to his sister.
    What could possibly go wrong?!!...
Well, as this flick sports no surprises, exactly what you'd expect to go wrong does go wrong.
Rather than being "fun", this one was more of a chore, as the dumb waitress gets herself deeper and deeper into this mess, without so much as a hint to a viable "exit strategy".
