Several stories agree that he took a gun safety class to buy a gun but
was prevented from doing so due to his citizenship status. Instead, he

So what grounds could there possibly be to claim asylum in the US?

An asylum claimant would state a credible fear of death, trumped-up
arrest, ethnic cleansing by a government actor. That's just to make the
claim. Somehow the claim must be proven at the hearing.

I'll be the first to agree that neither Egypt nor Kuwait are heaven on
earth but since when does that give an individual from these countries
the right to enter the US illegally and claim asylum?

No news article said he entered illegally. Reread the quote above.

As I understand the law (IANAL) shouldn't the judge's first question
be to establish that the claimant has grounds to apply for asylum? And
if they fail in that, the hearing should end in seconds with a denial
and deportation order.

He hadn't yet had his hearing.

Sure he has a right to a hearing but having gotten it, he doesn't have
the right to have things his way (e.g. legal US status)
