It's amazing and a little icky that Picard doesn't think to *ask* *him*
until war has nearly begun. He does the right thing in the end, but I'm
not sure he deserved the gesture of honor the kid showed him.

Yes, I think that's the gist. Picard asked, but didn't like the answer
and so decided he was just a dumb kid.
