I don't know how he managed to keep standing after experiencing the
recoil of the larger calibre weapons. His shoulder must have been in a
terrible state....

After every range day, my shoulder was always black-and-blue with bruises from
firing the 12-gauge shotgun with rifled slug instead of buckshot. Shoot that
ten times in a row and you'll be aching for a week. Nothing I'd rather have in
a firefight but I could do without shooting it at targets.

Why is a shotgun your first choice in a firefight? Clueless civilian
that I am, I would have thought that something with great accuracy,
fast/easy reloading with mags, and minimal recoil would be more
desireable, something like an AR-15 maybe. (I'm just guessing that an
AR-15 has minimal recoil since I've never heard of users complaining
about recoil.) Or is it more a psychological thing with the sound of a
shotgun racking being more intimidating to the people you are engaging
with?

I would imagine it's the takedown capability. Never fired a slug but
it's used for hunting deer so you can imagine the accuracy with a 12
gauge using slugs isn't that bad, but the takedown capability is
great. Even a 12 gauge using bird shot leaves an impact on your
shoulder (or at least it did when I was a kid.)
