Members of the black community have taken to social media to voice their
displeasure after Carnival Cruise announced a series of rule changes that
would be implemented effective immediately.
Black passengers feel the policies disproportionately target their culture
and music. The new rules include curfews for minors, restrictions on
marijuana, and bans on Bluetooth speakers and handheld fans, which Carnival
claims are for safety reasons.
Minors under 18 must now be out of public areas by 1 a.m. unless accompanied
by an adult or participating in a supervised teen program. Handheld fans,
especially non-battery-operated ones, are prohibited due to the loud "clack"
sound, which Carnival says could cause injuries in crowded areas.
Additionally, there have been reports that hip-hop and rap music are being
limited onboard, with some passengers noting the quiet disappearance of
these genres. DJs have reportedly declined requests for hip-hop and rap,
opting for more "sanitized" playlists instead.
Carnival has denied an official ban on specific music genres, stating that
their DJs play a wide variety of music, including hip-hop.
The cruise line has also introduced stricter enforcement of drink limits and
a zero-tolerance policy on marijuana, even if it is legal in a passenger's
home state. Violations can lead to removal from the ship, a lifetime ban, and
possible fines.
Carnival has defended these changes as a renewed commitment to safety and
