'Scrubs' Reboot Gets Series Order at ABC;
Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke to Return
----------------------------------------------------
"Scrubs" is officially scrubbing back in at ABC. Variety has
learned that the planned reboot of the beloved hospital comedy
has been ordered straight-to-series at the broadcaster for the
2025-2026 season.
As previously reported, original series star Zach Braff is
already onboard with the new show. Now, he will be joined by
fellow original cast members Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke.
According to sources, more original cast members are expected
to return.
"'Scrubs' means so very much to me. So excited for the chance
to get the band back together," said original series creator
Bill Lawrence.
The official logline for the new "Scrubs" states, "JD (Braff)
& Turk (Faison) scrub in together for the first time in a
long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but
their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and
old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart
and some surprises along the way."
Fellow "Scrubs" alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra will serve
as executive producers and showrunners on the revival of the
series, with Lawrence executive producing via Doozer along
with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. Braff, Faison, and Chalke
are also executive producing in addition to starring.
20th Television is the studio. Lawrence remains under his
overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, with that studio
carving out room for Lawrence to work with his former studio
partners on "Scrubs."
Braff is repped by CAA, Range Media Partners, and attorney Ken
Richman. Faison is repped by UTA and Fuller Law. Chalke is
repped by UTA, Untitled, and JSSK.
The new "Scrubs" was first reported to be in early development
in December 2024, while Braff's return was first reported in
May. The show originally aired on NBC for its first seven
seasons from 2001-2008, followed by two seasons at ABC from
2009-2010. The single-cam comedy took place at Sacred Heart
Hospital and followed the interns, doctors, nurses, and the
Janitor through their day-to-day lives at the hospital. Along
with Braff, Faison, and Braff, the cast included Judy Reyes,
Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Neil Flynn.
Prior to the pickup, ABC had only two pure comedies on its
schedule for 2025-2026 - returning shows "Abbot Elementary"
and "Shifting Gears." The network also ordered the spinoff
"9-1-1: Nashville" straight-to-series earlier this year. ABC
did not order any pilots during the traditional pilot season
this year, but is currently prepping the drama "RJ Decker"
starring Scott Speedman.
